IT Trailer Analysis

Audience
This trailer is the recent remake of the film IT, which is based on the original IT film which was released in 1990. This film targets both a male and female audience who are over the age of 15, this film will also appeal to fans of the horror genre because there are jump scares and typical things which are scary to people like in this film there is a clown which is trying to kill the children in the town. This film was given a age rating of 15 because it includes graphic sequences throughout with some strong language and jump scares.
Voice overs
During the trailer there is a part at the start which has a voice over in and then continues for a while until the child character tells the audience the facts about whats happening in the town. This voice over is from one of the main characters in the film who is one of the children who is trying to find out what is happening to the children who are disappearing in the town they live in which is called Derry. The character that they used in the voice over is young which suggests to the audience that he is vulnerable because the clown in the film is hunting for children.
Key points
Some key points which will need to be taken when watching the trailer would be the fact that the film is set within a small town called Derry which is located in America. Another key point in this film is that the clown is only selecting children as his victims, which makes the film more interesting because clowns are seen to be kind and friendly towards children. This is dangerous for the community because it means that children are becoming unsafe in there local area, also from the look of the trailer the red balloon is an important part of information because it seems to be the clowns calling card. Finally the last key point of this trailer is that the clown presents him self as different nightmares and fears which the children have, this means that the clown can transform into there worst nightmares making them a reality. As well only the children can see the clown which makes it more difficult for the children to get any help from the adults, this means that the children are going to need to work together and solve the threat.
Conversations
The conversations used in this trailer were effective because you were able to hear the tone of there voices which allows the audience to get the expression that the characters are scared of the clown and by whats happening to the town they live in. The conversations in the trailer also tell us that the characters are going to work together and try to find out whats happening and how they can stop the clown from taking anymore of the children. Lastly the conversations are very effective because they are easy to hear and understand because the music doesn't over power their voices.
Dramatic camera shots and angles
The dramatic shots and angles in this trailer are very effective and well used because it helps to draw the audience into the film and to make them forget about every day life helping them become emerged in the film. The over the hand shot used during the trailer is very effective because it gives the audience the feeling that they are looking at what the clown sees which is four children huddled up against the wall, this makes the scene dramatic because you are able to see how the children are reacting as well as how they are feeling about being close to death. In this camera shot you are also able to see the clowns hand which is easy to see because it is located in the middle left of the screen and because it draws your attention to it, as well the hand has sharp finger nails which makes it look even more scary. Finally this camera shot also blurs out the back ground because it wants the audience to pay full focus on the clowns hand which is coming out of his gloves which are on his hands.
Music to create atmosphere
The dramatic music at the start of the trailer is used to create a peaceful and pleasant opening scene which helps put you at ease especially when the clip shows it is raining. Next there is some eerie music which stats to play when the small boy gets scared by the clown who is in the drains, this is effective and well used because this music matches the small boy's expression. This eerie music then continues to the point where there is a red balloon which is slowly moving on its own in the back ground of the classroom, this music makes the scene interesting because it adds dramatic tension to the scene which makes both the characters and audience weary about there surroundings. Throughout the trailer there are thumping sounds which sound like your heart beat which gets faster and louder especially towards the end of the trailer were the clown starts to appear more often, as well there is also a pulse like sound which creates a dramatic scene in the trailer because it gives the impression that something is going to happen.
Film titles
The film title appeared at the end of the trailer which was effective because it made the audience wait till the end to find out what the film was called, this created tension till the very end. The name of the film was in bold red lettering which suggested to the audience that this film was going to include death and violence due to the fact that the colour red is represented to look like blood. The production titles appeared at the start of the trailer which allowed the audience to know what companies helped make the film, for example the companies used in this trailer were Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema which are very popular and effective in the film industry.
Trailer climax
The climax of the trailer is effective because it shows the audience a better image of the clown which is terrorising the children in the small town of Derry. In the final scene you see one of the main characters standing in the sewer looking down at his brother who is standing further away from him, this is the clown playing mind tricks on him because the clown killed his brother before this happened making the boy not real and a trap. After this the clown sprints at the boy screaming and then the screen cuts to black, this is effective for the audience because it leaves them wondering what has happened to the boy making the ending a cliff hanger.
Mise-en-scene
The film is set in the small town of Derry which is located in North America. You are able to tell that this town is a middle class residence because the neighborhood is well kept and a close community because of the posters they have up around the town. The characters that you see in the trailer look like typical American children because of the clothes that they wear which are smart casual, this is effective for the audience because it makes them remember when they were children playing in the streets and outside. The clown in this trailer is wearing a typical clown costume which has bright white and red colours on it, also the face paint used on this clown is effective for the audience because they can tell that this clown looks like a normal typical clown. The balloon used in the trailer is red which makes it look like a normal part of the clowns costume, this turns out to be a sign that the clown is coming to get you.
Camera
The camera shots used in this trailer for IT are very effective for the audience because it allows them to collect different information which they might not of picked up. The close up of the clowns face is effective because it shows you the clowns facial expressions which are not as normal as whats expected from it. The use of the over the shoulder shot at the start of the trailer when the small boy looks down the drain and the clown pops up is effective because it gives us the audience the idea of what the character is looking at.
Editing
The use of the editing for the productions at the start of the trailer are effective because each one is separated by a character folding a piece of paper into a boat, this is effective because it gives the audience time to read the productions of the film. The use of fade to black was used effectively during the trailer especially we it separated different scenes to make the trailer run more smoothly, this is effective for the audience because it shows them when new parts of the trailer is staring or changing scene.
Sound
The sound during the trailer was very good and effective because it matched with parts of the scenes, for example at the start of the trailer there is some peaceful music playing which is suddenly stopped when the small boy hits his head on the road sign. This is effective for the audience because it shows them that this film has a little bit of comedy which is good for the film, this also shows that the film is open to adding scenes which will make people laugh.
Genre indicators
This trailer is a good genre indicator because the trailer gives the audience a lot of information about the film. For example during the trailer you are able to see that this film is based on clown who is killing children in the town of  Derry. We can tell that this trailer is for a horror genre film because of the way the trailer makes you jump by using jump scares, the way the clown is shown in the trailer  suggests that this film is a horror due to the way they have made him look.
Unique selling point
The unique selling point of this film is that this film is a remake which means that it already has some sort of a fan base. Stephen King is one of the worlds most popular author of horror and thriller based books, so he will have a large fan base because of his books so there is a good chance that these fans would be interested in watching this film.
Comparison to other trailers of the same genre
In comparison to other films in this genre this one is relatively different because the antagonist is a clown which isn't usually seen in this type of film genre, this is because most horror genre films are based on ghost stories and or psychopaths.
