(Evaluation 1)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

· Representation: Have you subverted or conform to stereotypes typical of your genre? Take some screen shots of characters from yours and compare to screen shots from characters of other trailer. Write an analysis of the representation in your trailer.

Our trailer mostly conforms to the general stereotypes of action thriller genres because of the stereotypes that we used. For example our main character who is our protagonist is wearing relatively smart clothes which conforms to business people in action thriller films who are seen to be well educated and smartly dressed. We also use different types of props in our trailer which conforms to the general stereotypes of action thriller films, for example in our trailer we use a gun, rope and cars which are props which would be usually seen in action thriller films. I decided to compare the characters in our trailer to other in the film Taken because I think that our film is closely similar to the Taken films, this is because our trailer follows a similar story line.

In this image above it shows a small snippet of the antagonist in our trailer with the antagonist from the film Taken next to it. I decided to put these two together because they are very similar in the way they are played in both films because they both call people to kidnap someone close to the person they are trying to get payback from, they are also wearing the same kind of clothes which are basic everyday clothes because they don't want to be recognised by others which may be why they don't usually show their face. This will build an atmosphere which will make the audience want to find out what is about to happen next in the story line.

This image above includes both of our thugs in our trailer compared to the thugs in the Taken film. I decided to put these characters together because they are doing the same thing, for example they are kidnapping someone because they had been called up to do it for either some money or because the boss told them to do so. In our trailer you see a character being kidnapped with no one around as a witness while in the other screenshot you are seeing what is happening from the view of a witness. The screenshot shows that the kidnappers are disguised because the dont yet want to show the audience there identity this creates more of an interest in the film.

In this picture you can see there is a difference between the style we have gone with, for example the character in our trailer is male compared to the character in the film Taken which is female. In the clip where the character is being kidnapped you can tell the difference between them as the female is hidden under a bed as she knows that something is coming for her, compared to our trailer where the male is unknowing of the up coming advents which are going to change the story line. This creates tension for the audience because they know something is going to happen but they don't know when.

In this image you can see the similarities between the two characters, for example in both images you can see that the protagonist is dressed casually and that they are both on mobile phones. They are both listening intensely to the conversation which they seem to be having, this conversation will be important for the development of the story line. The lighting in both clips is different as in our trailer the background light is bright compared to the Taken one which is dark and sets a different mood which is eerie. This will create tension with the audience because they will want to know what is being said.

· Explore your use of sound. How does your use of sound compare with trailers of similar genres?

Compared to other action thriller trailers our sound is similar because we want to build a dramatic and intense scene which will make audiences want to watch our film due to it being appealing to action thriller fans. The music which we used was both fast and slow paced in certain parts, we wanted this because in certain scenes we wanted a slower build up of tension which means that when watching the clip you needed to be aware of what was going on in the trailer. For the faster scenes in our trailer we used music which had a build up of tension to make you think that something dramatic was going to happen at any moment. Compared to the Taken trailer the music was more instrumental with different musical instruments like drums and the piano. This is effective because not many action thriller trailers use solo instruments in them which makes this trailer unique compared to others in this genre. The build up from the drums is an intense sound like a heart beat the more scared you are the louder and faster the drum beats which adds tension to some of the most simplest of scenes.

· Use of titles: How did you use titles and how did they advertise your film in your trailer?

This title was created on a site called Coolvetica which is a website were you can find different types of fonts to best fit the text that you need. The name of the text which we used for this title was called Vtks Madalena Font which makes the writing look like it is covered with dirt or even splatters of blood if you change the colour. We decided to go with this font for some of our titles because we wanted the font to be mysterious and eerie to make it more effective for the audience, this also makes our production look more professional and appealing. We used these types of titles at the start and middle of the trailer where we include a small sentence which links to the story of the trailer, these titles helped to advertise our film because it helps to show the audience some examples of the titles which we will be using in the film and gives you information on what might happen.

This title was also created using a site called Coolvetica, the name of this font which we used for some of our titles is Libertatus Font Family. We decided to go with his font because it makes our media product look more professional with the little flicks on the end of each letter, we also decided to go with this type of font for our actors because it looks like many other fonts which are used by professional production companies. We used these types of titles towards the end of our trailer because we wanted to show them after each character was introduced to make it easier to link the actor to the character in the trailer. These titles helped to advertise our film because it helps to show the audience who the actors in the trailer are which means they can follow what they are doing in either the film or trailer.

· How like film posters and magazines are your ancillary texts? Do some comparisons of your own compared to examples of real versions.

In the image above is of two film magazine covers, the one on the left is a poster made by EMPIRE which is a well known film magazine and the one on the right is our film magazine which we made using the program Publisher. When looking at these two magazines you are able to see some comparisons, for example the big bold text which is on the magazine which makes the writing more eye catching and appealing to read, as well both magazines have the date and price on them which means that they are going to be able to see how much the magazine is going to cost. Another comparison is that the image on both the magazines are large and easy to see which means that the viewers are able to see characters which are in the film and decide if they are going to go and watch the film. The last comparison is that the name of the film is easy to read, this is because it stands out from the background and is bold which means that it is going to be easier to read from longer ranges.

· How have you made your trailer seem like a trailer? Take at least twelve snips and write up why these moments are significant and their appeal to the target audience.

This moment is significant because you get to see the first image of our antagonist in our trailer, this is appealing to the target audience because this is going to be the first actor that they see in the trailer which means they are going to be able to sympathies with the character as this is the first person they see. This is also appealing because it shows you that he is in a secrete location because the snip doesn't show the whole location of the area.
This moment is significant because it shows you one of the thugs in our trailer who has been called upon to do a certain job, this is appealing to the audience because this is the first time in the trailer where they see the thug in his costume. The audience can see that he is wearing dark clothes which suggests that you don't want to mess with him, as well this is appealing because it shows you that he is an important part to the story.
This moment is significant because you get to see the first shot of the victim just moments before he gets attacked, this is appealing to the audience because it shows you that he is dressed in standard clothes which makes him look like a every day person. This is also appealing to the audience because it shows the audience that he is vulnerable compared to others in the trailer.
This moment is significant because it is of the brother just before he gets kidnapped which is one of the mains scenes in the trailer. This is appealing to the audience because you are able to see both cars in the shot which is effective because it means that you are going to be able to see the whole scene take place. As well you are able to see that the brother is just doing everyday things like putting a parking ticket on his car before getting attacked.
This moment is significant because this is the moment where the protagonists brother gets kidnapped by the people who are hired by the antagonist. This is appealing to the audience because it gives you a glimpses of the two thugs attempting to kidnap the brother, this is also appealing because it shows you that the brother is confused and doesn't know what is happening to him.
This moment is significant because the brother drops his car keys onto the floor which allows the thugs to take his keys and use them to their advantage. This is appealing to the audience because it shows them that something is going to take place due to the fact that the keys are on the floor and that the camera is zoomed into them.
This moment is significant because it shows the thugs trying to force the brother into the car which suggests that he is trying to fight back. This is appealing to the audience because it shows them that he is about to be taken but is trying to stop it form happening, this is also appealing because it tells the audience that once he has been taken the story is going to dramatically develop.
This moment is significant because it is the final moments before the brother gets completely kidnapped. This is appealing for the audience because they are able to see that his hands are tied together which means that it is going to be impossible to escape at that moment of time. As well it shows them that they have finished putting him in the boot of the car which means that they are free to take him to the boss.
This moment is significant because it shows you that there is an unknown caller who is trying to contact the protagonist. This is appealing to the audience because it leaves them wondering who is calling the protagonist and why is he being called. As well this is also appealing because it makes you want to know who is on the other side of the phone.
This moment is significant because this is the first time that the protagonist and the antagonist speak to each other which creates tension. This is appealing to the audience because it makes them want to fully understand why this is happening, as well they want to know what is going to happen during the remainder of the trailer, for example is he going to be able to save his brother who has been captured.
This moment is significant because this is the part when the main protagonist walks into the building where his brother is being held hostage. This is appealing to the audience because this is the first time we get to see the brothers together which creates a particular scene where they are reunited. This is also appealing to the audience because this scene builds up tension because you don't know who is also in the building with him which suggests that he could be in danger if he doesn't enter with care.
This moment is significant because this is the part when the protagonist finds his brother with a bag over his head. This is appealing for the audience because they don't know if the brother is alive which means that he might be to late. This is also appealing to the audience because there is a bag on his head which suggests that he has been attacked multiple times and has then been left alone to possibly die.
This moment is significant because you are able to see the main antagonist pull a gun onto the protagonist which suggests that something bad is going to happen, this is appealing to the audience because it makes them want to know what happens next because the protagonist is caught in a vulnerable spot with a gun pulled up to his head which tells the audience that he is going to need to be careful.

· Voice-over- Provide a voice-over of your trailer where you explain choices and outcomes.

· Institution Analysis: What sort of company would have made your film? How did you create your own production titles and how did you place them conventionally in your trailer?

This image above includes both our film institutions and another well known one which is called 20th Century Fox. If our film was to be produced professionally I would say that a company like 20th Century Fox would be our film institution because they have worked to make films like Taken which is very similar to our film. We made our film institutions using Adobe Premiere Elements 15, we started out by finding an image off the internet and placing it onto the program were we added writing over the top which appeared and disappeared at certain points to make the institution look more professional. To make the other film institution on the right we added a white back ground to the clip and added a clip over it where we had some birds flying across the screen which would then disappear over time, we also added some writing to the institution which flashes in and out at different times, when the first word appears it would then fade out so the other word can appear next to it in a different colour. We placed our institution in a conventional position at the start of our trailer because when watching other trailers we saw that most of their institutions came at the start of the trailer.
