Men in Black: Trailer Analysis

Audience
This trailer is for Men in Black which was released in 1997. The audience which this film is trying to attract are younger males who like science fiction and action films. This film also includes some comedy in it so it will cover a larger audience with the mixture of the tree. This film was given an age rating of PG which meant that a wider audience could watch the film because its available for most ages. Will Smith will be a huge draw for this film because he was relatively well known due to the fact that he was in a very successful TV series called The Fresh Prince of Bel Air which was filmed in America. This will widen the target audience because people who are fans of him will want to watch the film as well. Tommy Lee Jones has been a actor for many years before the film was released which meant that he also already has some sort of a fan base.
Voice overs
During the trailer there is a man who is making a statement about the defense of the world while the other main character is making more fun about the situation so this puts the aspect of the comedy into the trailer. Its like a good cop bad cop situation which always works in these types of films.
Key points
Some key points which will need to be taken when watching the trailer would be the fact that the film is set on Earth sometime in the future. They are here to protect the Earth and its people at whatever the cost to them and the organisation they work for. Another key point is that this film involves secrete agents which means they need to make sure that they do there job properly otherwise there cover will be blown leading to them losing there job. This suggests that it is very important for the agents to take there job seriously so they don't put anyone at risk.
Dramatic camera shots and angles
The dramatic shots and angles in this trailer are very effective and well used because it helps to draw the audience into the film and to make them forget about every day life helping them become emerged in the film. In one part you can see a space ship crash land in front of the two main characters and the camera is filming from behind them so you see the full effect of the force of what could happen to them. The camera picks up the detail of the full force of the mud slide which is about to engulf them putting you right in the middle of the film.
Music to create atmosphere
The music during the trailer is up beat which links to the personality of one of the secrete agents which is fun and calm. This suggests that this film is going to include some comedy parts in it which would make the film more relaxing and fun to watch.
Film titles
The film title is dramatic with a black background which then disappears with the bright white initials of the films name. It is like the letters are breaking through the darkness with the two main characters standing in the actual letter "I" dressed in black. So this is a clever way of doing this because it is like a play on words because they are actually doing what it said.
Trailer climax
The climax of the trailer is effective because it shows the audience more about what is being said to the viewer than what you actually see, for example "Men in Black protecting the Earth from the scum of the Universe". This is effective because it tells the audience that these men are aiming to protect the world from alien evasion.
Mise-en-scene
The film is set on Earth and could be from any modern time setting because no one knows what is going on, it is like a parallel universe. The uniform worn by both of the main characters is simply as it is mainly black as the name of the film suggest, this also suggests that they take there job seriously because they are dressed in the correct uniform for the job. In the trailer you can also see the weapons that they use which are much more futuristic realistic which links to the film being set in the future.
Editing
The use of the editing for the productions at the start of the trailer are effective because it fades in and out which allows the trailer to run more smoothly. The way the titles pop up and away are very effective because it allows the audience to find out information that they might not already know. The use of cuts during the trailer is very effective because it allows the trailer to speed up which makes the action scenes more dramatic.
Sound
The sound during the trailer was very good and effective because it matched with parts of the scenes, for example the explosion of the car which is shot by one of the weapons used by the agents makes a loud explosion noise, which suggests that this film is going to have lots of action scenes in it as well as some visual and special effects in it.
Genre indicators
This trailer is a good genre indicator because the trailer gives the audience a lot of information about the film. For example during the trailer you are able to see that this film is based on secret agents who are trying to protect the Earth from aliens who are here to coarse trouble. The film covers a number of different genres such as science fiction, action and comedy which so more people should enjoy the film.
Unique selling point
The unique selling point in this trailer for the film Men in Black, is that it comes across as family orientated production. Tommy Lee Jones has been an actor for many years and would have many people who enjoy his films and would be interested in this more up to date roll. He is also an Academy Award winner for best Supporting Actor in 1993, other actors which star in this film are Will Smith and David Cross. The idea for this film is taken from The Men in Black comic books which are very successful in America. Another unique selling point is that the visual effects for this film are some of the best seen for this time which made it more appealing to the audience. The title song for this film is also sung by one of the main characters Will Smith.
